Cannabis Classes in Mt. Pleasant?

Should Mid Michigan College be offering degrees in the Cannabis industry? There are several different parts of cannabis education that aren’t easily accessible to an individual such as; law, business, medical, science and cultivation. If Mid Michigan College were to offer courses teaching cannabis then it would help bridge the gap of accessibility to knowledge and ultimately bring in new students who want to explore this new industry.

It is understood that there is a lot of controversy over cannabis cultivation as the states are legalizing but the federal has yet to do so. The federal government hasn’t legalized cannabis, it is true that there are risks of repercussions from the feds when it comes to handling cannabis. Another fact that in order to offer these new classes there would have to be some sort of funding that pays for new lab equipment and new staff.

Each individual here at Mid Michigan College strives to provide more adequate and  up-to-date education for students by offering degrees and certificates that are currently in demand to help progress the economy of the community. Mary Esch wrote an article in the Detroit News about cannabis classes  …” ahead for all kinds of careers in cannabis , ranging from greenhouse and dispensary operators to edible product developers, marketing specialists, quality assurance lab directors and pharmaceutical researchers. Arcview Market Research, which focuses on cannabis industry trends, projects the industry will support 467,000 jobs by 2022.” (Para 4). That means that over 450,000 individuals will need to fill the roles of educated cannabis employees. The employers will be looking for individuals who specialize in the cannabis industry such as cultivation and agriculture for cannabis industrialization and mass production. Employers will need individuals that have knowledge of cannabis related laws at a state and federal level. In addition this select group must stay up-to-date with relevant laws regarding cannabis as they change at anytime. Cannabis medicine is also a job field that needs individuals with the knowledge to get the most efficient medical value and information regarding the beneficial usages for a wide variety of disease and viruses. There will also be a need for scientists specializing in the science and research of cannabis.

If the cannabis plant is never actually present at the school than the federal government has no reason to come to raid the school. If the school were to allow videos or internet streaming  as several of school course are via Moodle, then the school shouldn’t have anything to fear. As for the real world application and usage of said courses, there are other species of plants with similar properties in which to use as a viable substitute for cannabis. Esch talks in her article about Northern Michigan University using other plants as a substitute for cannabis. “ Students won’t be growing marijuana, which was recently legalized by Michigan voters for recreational use. But Canfield said students will learn to measure and extract medicinal compounds from plants such as St. John’s Wort and ginseng and transfer that knowledge to marijuana.” (Para 7)  She later in her article continues with ““We’re following the market,” said Jennifer Gilbert Jenkins, an assistant professor at the State University of New York at Morrisville. At this particular college in rural central New York, that’s launching a new minor in cannabis studies in its horticulture department this year. Students work with hemp and other plants rather than marijuana, but can take internships at medical marijuana facilities…” (Para 14). Both quotes talk about how the schools that are teaching cannabis education without having the dangers of the federal government’s laws and consequences.

Given this information it would be beneficial to both Mid Michigan College and to the community if cannabis classes were to be offered at Mid.

Challenges Becoming: A Substance Abuse Counselor

A substance abuse counselors main goal is to create a strong relationship with their patients ultimately guiding them through recovery and empowering patients to recognize and change their problematic behaviors. A substance abuse counselor will have a college educated background where they learned to be able to achieve that goal effectively.

If someone was thinking about becoming a substance abuse counselor then they should take a moment to reflect on whether or not they truly have the desire to help others no matter how challenging helping patients can be. Next they should take into consideration some of the soft skills that are necessary for helping patients in recovery. Soft skills are skills that someone already has within themselves but are refined and strengthened during the college education process.  Being able to listen clearly and to be able to communicate with clear meaning are necessary skills for a counselor to make a meaningful relationship with a patient. During an interview with Isaac Dieterman of the ten sixteen network, Dieterman comments that “Communication is huge, counseling is a relationship where there is open communication… With any kind of relationship you need good communication or its just not going to work out. So communication is extremely important in this line of work.”  What he means is that a counselor-patient relationship depends on good communication skills to form a trusting open bond between counselor and patient. When a patient feels like their counselor is listening to what they are saying and feeling they are more adapt to opening up to their counselor about their past experiences. Also with good listening skills a counselor will be able to hear problematic behaviors that would cause a patient to relapse. Being able to help a patient understand their problematic behaviors and teach them tools for recovery come with having good communication and listening skills.

Unconditional positive regard means that the counselor accepts the patient for who they are and is not withdrawn if the patient makes bad choices. As Dieterman says “unconditional positive regard is all about seeing the individual not by their problem but as another human being that needs help.” What Dieterman means is that a counselor should be able to not judge the patient on what they have been through or why they are seeking help but instead be able to see another individual trying to get help. Saul McLeod writes about Carl Rogers discovery stating that “Unconditional positive regard is where parents, significant others (and the humanist therapist) accepts and loves the person for what he or she is.  Positive regard is not withdrawn if the person does something wrong or makes a mistake.” Mcleod is saying basically the same thing as Dieterman in that unconditional positive regard means to accept another individual without regards to their past and mistakes.

Ethics are also necessary skills when working with addicts in recovery because it is important for a patient to feel as though they are genuinely cared about while keeping confidentiality. A substance abuse counselor should be able to help the patient without their patients feeling as though they are being judged when they reveal the deepest of their life experiences. As Faizah Imani states in his article Code of Ethics for Substance Abuse Counselors, “The substance abuse counselor is obligated to maintain the confidentiality of all client sessions. This includes the identities of her clients … information discussed during counseling sessions…. All recordings of client sessions, as well as paperwork containing client data, must be stored in a secure location.” (Para 2) This means that a substance abuse counselor should always make every interaction confidential from all of the data you collect to conversation in sessions. It is really important to uphold this confidentiality mainly because it is the law but also because a counselor-patient relationship is built on a layer of trust. The only legal way to break confidentiality according to Imani “… to disclose confidential information to federal authorities … involving child abuse or a medical emergency. Otherwise, the client must sign a release form” (para 2)  What he means is that if the patient reveals that he or she is a danger to themself or endangering someone else then it is up to the counselor to uphold their ethics and going to the authorities with the information. For example if the patient reveals that she pushed her ten year old down the stairs which resulted in a broken bone then it is up to the counselor to call Child Protective Services and/or the Police for the safety of the ten year old. Another way to look at a substance abuse counselor’s ethics as Imani put it “ … prohibited from discriminating against clients based on race, gender, sexual orientation, handicap, religion, political views or any other reason.” (Para 3)  Therefore in order to be an ethical substance abuse counselor then they should not discriminate against any patient for any reason once again it’s against the law but also its not good for a substance abuse counselors career and reputation.

Learning to be a great addiction counselor takes a lot of hard work and determination during and after college. Throughout college someone who is learning to be an addiction counselor will have to learn a vast set hard skills like literacy, research, computer literacy. For example a substance abuse counselor have to undergo some research of their patients major history by having sessions and making detailed accounts of the patients experiences. Then substance abuse counselor will need to know how to fill out relapse prevention plans with patients so they know what to do when they have cravings or are put in tough situations. Substance abuse counselors also should be able to help patients with plans or goals for they patients future without drugs. In order to be able to do so they have to be able to not only communicate but also be able to read and write the answers on paper as well as computers.

Critical thinking is one of the most difficult and important hard skills learned throughout  college because the student has to learn a whole new way to think and look at problems. For example Robert L. Williams, Renee Oliver and Susan Stockdale  who wrote Journal of General Education published by Penn State University Press state that ‘..critical thinking to be more strongly linked to performance in a course than a generic measure…. If a performance task requires a high level of critical thinking, then critical thinking measures should strongly predict performance of that task.’ (38) This is just relaying that their theory is that the better the students learn and know how to think critically the better performance they will have in that class course.  Which if they are doing better in classes because of critical thinking then the results would be that they will do better after college. Psychology specifically is a field of work that needs its employees to know how to use critical thinking in order to function.

Therefore learning to be in the field of psychology is going to take a lot of hard work and determination. Someone who is looking to go into psychology is going to have to learn to critical think while being unjudgemental.

All about me

A Little Bit of Angel

My name is Angel M Randolph and this is my narrative essay. In this paper I will be talking about what I like to learn and what motivates me. I will also talk about some fear that I have that could hold me back.

What motivates me to be the best person inside and outside the classroom? I would have to say that my main motivation is Dakotah, my son. When I look at my son I know that I want to give him a decent life beyond what I can give him now. I also want him to grow up knowing that it is possible to follow your dreams because mommy did. Billy Graham an Evangelist and Southern Baptist Preacher had once said that, “The greatest legacy one can pass on to one’s children and grandchildren is not money or other material things accumulated in one’s life, but rather a legacy of character and faith.” (Compassion International).

Personally I love learning new things so I’m actually pretty excited to be starting school again. Gardening is one of the most satisfying skills that I’ve learned so far in life. There is something captivatingly beautiful about watching a seed sprout, continuing to grow every day.  I spent hours looking up what was the best way to go about tending and harvesting crops through the internet. Youtube.com helped a lot because I was able to learn when and how to plant, the best soils to use for different plants, and when to prune and harvest. The more time spent in the garden the more satisfying it is in the fall when harvest comes and you get to enjoy your crop.

My biggest challenge this year is going to be self doubt, telling myself that I can’t accomplish my goals. Though I have been to rock bottom many different times in many different ways, I still push myself to believe that one day these dreams I have will be my future. A part of me feels as if I have a calling like I had to go to rock bottom so I had experience when I help others.  I’ve been taught a lot of rough lessons in the last few years the biggest being that you can’t save or change someone who doesn’t want it for themselves. It has taken me years of my life to fully come to this realization and accept it. Three and a half of those years I spent trying to make a relationship work where the other party did not want to change, wanting things his way only. Every day that passed by the less ‘helping him’ was happening so that I was losing myself more with time. As cliché as it sounds I didn’t want my little boy to lose his dad nor did I want to raise him on my own. Then I realized that doing this on my own was probably the best therefore I chose to go to school against all odds to fallow my dreams.

My biggest goal in school is to learn as much as I can, I like to learn and I’ve missed it over the years. I would like to take as much as I knowledge as I can get into my head, preferably things that would help opening rehabilitating homeless shelters or writing. I also feel as though school is going to help me achieve being a better person to my community and family.

In conclusion we have learned that I, Angel M Randolph, loves to learn new things, strives to do better for my child, and has learn a lot of life lessons. We have also learned that I am trying to make a better life for myself and my child.

Introduce Yourself (Example Post)

This is an example post, originally published as part of Blogging University. Enroll in one of our ten programs, and start your blog right.

You’re going to publish a post today. Don’t worry about how your blog looks. Don’t worry if you haven’t given it a name yet, or you’re feeling overwhelmed. Just click the “New Post” button, and tell us why you’re here.

Why do this?

  • Because it gives new readers context. What are you about? Why should they read your blog?
  • Because it will help you focus you own ideas about your blog and what you’d like to do with it.

The post can be short or long, a personal intro to your life or a bloggy mission statement, a manifesto for the future or a simple outline of your the types of things you hope to publish.

To help you get started, here are a few questions:

  • Why are you blogging publicly, rather than keeping a personal journal?
  • What topics do you think you’ll write about?
  • Who would you love to connect with via your blog?
  • If you blog successfully throughout the next year, what would you hope to have accomplished?

You’re not locked into any of this; one of the wonderful things about blogs is how they constantly evolve as we learn, grow, and interact with one another — but it’s good to know where and why you started, and articulating your goals may just give you a few other post ideas.

Can’t think how to get started? Just write the first thing that pops into your head. Anne Lamott, author of a book on writing we love, says that you need to give yourself permission to write a “crappy first draft”. Anne makes a great point — just start writing, and worry about editing it later.

When you’re ready to publish, give your post three to five tags that describe your blog’s focus — writing, photography, fiction, parenting, food, cars, movies, sports, whatever. These tags will help others who care about your topics find you in the Reader. Make sure one of the tags is “zerotohero,” so other new bloggers can find you, too.
